Artist Statement
My work is based on an ongoing investigation of forms, which I create with the technique of ink floating. This process allows me to work more intuitively, by dripping paint onto a tray filled with liquid and then manipulating the floating paint into desired shapes. When I find a desirable composition I transfer the image by laying a sheet of paper onto the surface and lift it off. I tend to find my imagery in the process, which gives me many possibilities to work back into the design both visually and conceptually. My one of a kind monotypes are the results of a compressed semi-transparent imagery.
In my past work, I have been interested in capturing elements of nature that can only be observed through a microscope and blowing them up out of proportion. My anatomy and botany inspired, mostly untitled work, may evoke human or plant viscera, or microscopic fragments of cellular structures. Flat shapes of colors with alchemical and superimposed designs resulted in visceral, abstracted, pictorial imagery. With my purely experimental work I aimed to invite the viewer on a visual journey.
For the past five years my attention turned to eastern approaches of ink floating. Through careful observation and experimentation I am expanding the vocabulary of forms and patterns I have been using in my work. My new series of prints explore “organized chaos” that reflects nature through the process of “Suimonga”- also known as “picture of water patterns”-a contemporary form of Japanese ink floating. The resulting imagery resembles cross sections of minerals and gemstones which conjure up images of a Taoist Scholar’s stone used in Shang Ching dream yoga meditation. My work requires the observer to take a closer look. The question of "how" may immediately arise, which explained by my curiosity with the infinite possibilities of design, coupled with the alchemy of the process. These are the driving forces behind my art. Although my way of working is more controlled now than in the past, my imagery develops in the process, where chance and manipulation are equally present.
Through my interest in meditation and eastern philosophy my recent work intends to reflect a state of mind. Based on intuition rather than preconceived ideas my work is continuously evolving.
